Gainesville Burger Club: Giving Back to the Community

As part of our initiative to give back to the community, Gainesville Burger Club embarked on a mission this August to fund and serve a meal at GRACE Marketplace. GRACE is a low-barrier shelter serving anyone in the Gainesville and Alachua County area experiencing or at risk of homelessness. The organization aims to end homelessness by offering safe shelter while seeking permanent housing for those it serves.

One of the pillars of GRACE is Café 131, which serves between 400 and 500 meals per day to those in need. Gainesville Burger Club was proud to have participated, and our executive committee plans on making this a regular part of our volunteer and community activism strategy.

Delicious Griddled Perfection at Daybreak

Daybreak

Tucked away in the quaint historic Pleasant Street neighborhood in NW Gainesville, Daybreak Pleasant Street has been making a name for itself among Gainesvillians who crave hearty and well-crafted breakfast and lunch fare. Daybreak’s menu is quite diverse, offering an array of tasty dishes that cater to carnivores and vegans alike.

When we sat down, the waitress was juggling orders of stuffed brioche French toast and massive omelettes overflowing with everything from goat meat to braised collards and pimento cheese around the small restaurant. But we weren’t there for any of those. We were on a mission to sample what’s been rumored to be one of the city’s best burgers.

And we weren’t disappointed. The burger came to our table presented open face, with one side of the perfectly toasted potato bun donning a jacket of mixed greens, a summer-fresh tomato slice, pickled red onions, and house-made half-sour pickles. Perched on the bottom bun were two griddled grass-fed beef patties covered in molten American cheese. Once the two sides were unified, Daybreak’s burger became a perfect marriage of salt, tang, sharpness, and beefiness. And, if this were a potato club, Daybreak’s home fries would deserve their own article. Kosher salt, pepper, parsley, and a quick swim in the frier were all these red potatoes needed to shine.

Since Daybreak’s dining room is quite small, only a small group of GBC members attended this meeting. But we’ll be back in force to give this wonderful Gainesville treasure a full executive committee rating.

Another Beautiful Evening at Public & General

Have we mentioned our love for Public & General?

It’s NE Gainesville’s diamond, and a place where you can hang with good buds, drink some spirits, and sample one of the best burgs in the Greater Gainesville area.

If you haven’t been to one of Mayflower Cellars‘ pop-up events, you’re missing out. The Mayflower grill master was manning the coals on our last visit to Cypress and Grove brewery. The result? Amazing local craft beer paired with farm-fresh beef straight from the butcher. I just wish I took a better photo!

2016 GBC Burger of the Year Goes to Public & General

After careful deliberation, Gainesville Burger Club has awarded Public & General the coveted 2016 GBC Burger of the Year trophy. When added together, their blend of simple, fresh ingredients amounts to something more than just a sum of parts. The burger comes close to the Platonic Ideal of what we perceive as hamburger. So, thank you, P&G. You are truly dedicated to craft.
